This is an itinerant role based at the Board office under the direction of the District Principal – Learning Support.  The Mentor Educational Assistant (MEA) utilizes their knowledge and expertise as an Educational Assistant to mentor and develop Educational Assistant General (EAG) staff across the district in their job duties and functions. Demonstrating a strong motivation to support and enthusiasm for the critical work that EAs do, the primary objectives for the MEA will be:

  • Skill enhancement, coaching/mentoring
  • Mentoring new employees
  • Providing additional supports where needed
  • Orientation
  • Assisting with processes, as needed
  • In the event there are no opportunities to fulfill the primary objectives outlined above, the mentor shall fill a spareboard vacancy.

This is a dynamic and evolving role that requires an individual who is comfortable demonstrating leadership and has the natural ability to communicate effectively when analyzing a situation and making practical, well thought recommendations to the staff they mentor.

EAGs can request a mentorship consult on their own or mentorship can be requested by a Principal on behalf of an EA. Each mentorship opportunity will be no longer than one week in length, and can include support with accessing additional specific training, furthering understanding of student needs, using technology more effectively and efficiently. At the end of the mentorship opportunity, the mentor, mentee and school administrator would complete an evaluation of the mentorship opportunity.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Mentor EAG’s in building their confidence and skills to be more successful in their role.
  2. Assess mentorship opportunities and make recommendations.
  3. Support Education Assistant learning opportunities.
  4. Check-ins/orientation of new EA hires in schools.
  5. Support the creation of materials to be shared with EAs re orientation.

Qualifications: 

As identified on EAG job description with a minimum of three years continuing experience as an Educational Assistant within the Greater Victoria School District supporting students who have a range of complex needs requiring support.  Proven experience mentoring adults is required.  Preference for completion of recognized training in 1) Autism; 2) Applied Behaviour Analysis and/or Intensive Behaviour Interventions; 3) Proactive Behaviour Strategies & Social Emotional Learning; 4) CPI.

This is a two year temporary position (10 months) as outlined by the CUPE 947 collective agreement with the successful applicant to receive an allowance of three dollars ($3) per hour over the EAG pay rate, for the duration of the temporary position.  This position is based out of the Tolmie office but is itinerant, moving across schools throughout the school district as required.  Skills and abilities to perform the role will be assessed via an interview process jointly conducted by the Employer and Union. Applicants scoring 70% and above shall be deemed to possess the skills and ability to perform the mentor role, with seniority determining the successful applicant.
