Manager, Occupational Health and Safety

 

The Greater Victoria School District provides public educational services to over 20,000 students in the Greater Victoria area.  To provide this service, the District has an operating budget of approximately $210 million and approximately 3,000 employees; which include teachers, administrators, support staff, psychologists, speech and language pathologists and exempt managerial staff.

Reporting to the Director, Human Resource Services, the Manager, Occupational Health and Safety will be responsible for ensuring Workers’ Compensation regulatory compliance, including the exploration and development of new, best-practice health and safety programs, and for managing a return-to-work and disability portfolio to ensure a healthy and safe work environment for employees.  As well, the Manager, Occupational Health and Safety assists in issues associated with health and safety, including occupational violence-related matters, duty to accommodate matters, investigations and ensures that facilities, equipment, and work procedures comply with applicable statutory requirements. This position is responsible for the supervision of two exempt employees.

As a key member of the Human Resources team, the successful applicant will possess the ability to provide guidance in best practices to school principals and various administrative staff.  The ability to build and maintain effective working relationships and to resolve issues in a consultative manner are vital to this position.  The successful applicant will have proven conflict resolution and negotiation skills and will demonstrate excellent organizational and interpersonal skills that complement the ability to deliver innovative, customer-focused service.  This position also requires the ability to work under pressure, individually and as part of a team.

The successful candidate will have a post-secondary diploma and/or a University degree in Health and Safety, or a related discipline.  The candidate will have 5-7 years’ experience in Health and Safety, including hands on experience in designing/implementing safety initiatives, preferably in a school district setting and/or in a large multi-union environment ideally in the broader public sector.

The successful applicant will have a thorough knowledge of the Workers Compensation Act, WorkSafe BC Occupational Health and Safety regulations, and claims management, plus a demonstrated track record of managing accident investigations and worksite inspections, occupational disability claims and return to work initiatives. In addition, a demonstrated ability to provide advice and support to principals, managers, supervisors, employees and Health and Safety committee representatives, plus experience in a manager position, would be a significant asset. A professional designation in health and safety, such as the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation, would also be an asset.

This is an exempt position with a salary range of $90,022 to $112,528 and a comprehensive employee benefits package. The starting salary within this range shall be based on experience and qualifications.
