Indigenous Educational Student and Family Advocate

The Greater Victoria School District provides public educational services to over 20,000 students in the Greater Victoria Area, encompassing six municipalities. To provide this service, the District has a current operating budget of $260 million and employs approximately 3,500 staff; which includes, teachers, administrators, support staff, psychologists, speech and language pathologists and exempt managerial staff.
The Indigenous Student and Family Advocate will advocate and provide cultural and holistic support, resources and initiatives for Indigenous students in our schools, Nations and communities. They will collaborate with schools on initiatives that seek to build culturally supportive relationships and provide access to resources in order to promote understanding of Indigenous history. Qualifications and Experience:
- Grade 12 or equivalent and a minimum of two years post-secondary education in Indigenous/ First Nations Studies, Social Work or Child & Youth Care
- Minimum of 12 credits in Indigenous/ First Nations Studies
- Valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver’s License
- Minimum two years’ experience working with Indigenous children and families, preferably in an educational or childcare context
- Demonstrated knowledge of historical Indigenous culture, the Lekwungen territory, worldviews and contemporary discourses experiences by Indigenous people and community
- Strong relational, organizational and communication skills
- Ability to build effective working relationships with District and school staffs
- Demonstrated experience creating and leading programs and initiatives
- Ability to speak or understand an Indigenous language an asset

This position falls under the CUPE collective agreement at a pay rate of $35.15/hr, 32.5hrs/ week, plus a comprehensive benefits package after successful completion of probation.
