EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT – BRAILLIST
The Greater Victoria School District is looking to hire an Educational Assistant – Braillist. This is a full time continuing position working 30 to 35 hours per week (depending on the grade level of the student), 10 months per year.
The Greater Victoria School District provides public educational services to over 20,000 students in the Greater Victoria Area, encompassing six municipalities. To provide this service, the District has a current operating budget of $208 million and employs approximately 3,500 staff; which includes, teachers, principals and vice-principals, support staff, psychologists, speech and language pathologists and exempt managerial staff.
The Educational Assistant-Braillist directly supports the specific needs of students with visual impairments who use braille and are on a Dogwood path to graduation. These needs include providing adapted materials in an accessible format (braille/tactile), academic assistance related to access of classroom materials to the student, supporting specific goals related to the visual impairment, and facilitating the inclusion of the student in the school setting. This is an itinerant position.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Grade 12 or equivalent, and
- One (1) year Education Assistant and Community Support Worker certificate or equivalent combination of post-secondary courses in child or adolescent development, or behaviour management, and
- Successful completion of the Unified English Braille (UEB) Literary Braille Transcriber’s Certification and the UEB Technical Extension certification by CNIB or equivalent.
- Current Level One First Aid
- One (1) year experience working with special needs persons. Experience with students with visual impairments is preferred.
- Candidates must have experience successfully using assistive technology in the production of Braille and tactile graphics, such as Duxbury, JAWS and Magic. In addition, the successful candidate must be able to provide clarification of instructional concepts of students by describing lessons, videos, visual material and providing models or tactile graphics.
This is a continuing position working 30 to 35 hours per week (depending on the grade level of the student), 10 months per year. This position falls within the CUPE 947 collective agreement at a pay rate of $28.31 per hour, plus benefits.
