Board Meeting Highlights – June 24, 2019

School Crossing Guard Funding

Trustees passed a motion that directs the Board Chair to write relevant funders to help advocate for the maintenance of funding for school crossing guards.

Climate Action Plan

The Board officially declared a Climate Emergency and directed the Superintendent to develop a Climate Change Action Plan with specific objectives and measurements that are in alignment with the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The plan would include strategies for how schools and facilities across the District can help cut greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. In addition, the Board will also be encouraging other school districts and governmental agencies to develop their own plans to help combat climate change.

Spectrum Turf and Rink Project

The Board directed the Superintendent to instruct staff to collaborate with stakeholders in developing a formal business plan for the Spectrum Turf and Rink project.

In December, the Board approved a motion for Spectrum Community School to move forward with a feasibility study that would explore the possibility of installing a “pop-up” ice rink and a new all-weather turf field on the school property. The school principal and athletic director proposed the projects at the December 10th Operations Policy and Planning Committee Meeting.
