Board Meeting Highlights – December 2020

Standing Committee Elections
Nominations were called for Chair of the Education Policy and Directions Committee and Chair of the Operations Policy and Planning Committee.

Ryan Painter was elected as Chair of the Education Policy and Directions Committee. Elaine Leonard was acclaimed as Chair of the Operations and Policy Planning Committee.

Elected Trustees will assume these committee roles for a year.

Budget Process Approval
The Board approved the budget process for 2021-22 school year. The Secretary-Treasurer presented an engagement and approval plan, which will begin in January. The budget process includes engaging with students, staff, parents and educational partners to build a greater understanding of the annual budget process, to help inform budget allocation, and to set priorities that align with the District’s vision of equitable opportunities and success for all students.

Ecole Beausoleil moves to a temporary home at Braefoot
Under Public Disclosure of In-Camera Items, the Board informed it would be moving tenant Conseill Scolaire Francophone (CSF) School District from the current Sundance School to a temporary location after the one-year extension on their lease comes to an end in June 2021. The students will be placed in learning studios at Braefoot Elementary while CSF secures a more permanent location. Funding for the temporary home will be through the Ministry of Education to the CSF and at no cost to SD61.  Sundance Elementary will welcome SD61 kindergarten and grade one students in September 2021.

Victoria High School Neighbourhood Learning Centre
Under Public Disclosure of In-Camera Items, the Board advised it would be pursuing plans for the Victoria High School Neighbourhood Learning Centre that would include child care, a combined meeting and classroom space for the Inter-Cultural Association, enhancements to the rooftop for an astronomy observatory with Indigenous learning elements, expanded servery for community use,  and an artificial turf field in partnership with Bays United Football Club, City of Victoria and the Victoria High School Alumni Association.

Educational Assistants
A motion to direct the Superintendent to staff early child care programs with CUPE 947 members was postponed to March 2021.
