Greater Victoria School District observes National Day of Mourning on April 28th

VICTORIA, BC – The Canadian flag will be lowered to half-mast at the Board Office on April 28, 2022, to remember workers across the country who have lost their lives as the result of a workplace injury, illness, or disease.

This is a significant day for recognizing the importance of health and safety in the workplace, and employees’ rights to a safe and healthy work environment. The Greater Victoria School District reaffirms its commitment to providing healthy and safe environments for all staff and students.

Two years into a global pandemic, it is crucial to recognize the sacrifices of those on the frontlines and those who may have experienced a loss or injury due to a work-related incident. The District encourages staff and students to hold a moment of silence to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of frontline and essential workers in our learning community, and our greater community.

Last year, workplace injuries and illnesses claimed the lives of 161 workers in the province. More than half (99) of the work-related deaths were the result of occupational disease—53 were the result of exposure to asbestos, with many exposures happening decades earlier.
