Esquimalt High Students Lift Community Spirit with Gingerbread House Bake Sale

VICTORIA, BC ─ The Esquimalt High School Culinary Program is baking gingerbread house kits to help support families in need over the holiday season. Students will be creating their own gingerbread ‘kindness kits’ over the coming weeks to help raise proceeds for CFAX Santas Anonymous. The intention is to spread a little holiday cheer while encouraging families to engage in a creative and safe activity during the pandemic.

“Our Board of Education is always thrilled to hear how our students are finding creative ways to raise up our community,” said Board Chair Jordan Watters. “We understand that the holidays will look different this year due to COVID-19 and that it may be incredibly challenging for some families due to restrictions. More than ever we need to find ways like this to brighten each other’s spirits.”

“It’s nice to be able to help and know that you are doing something to help other kids, especially given the current situation,” said grade 11 student, Alexandra Kurz. “I think more families will need access to support and services during this time so it feels good to help any way we can.”

“I personally love baking and it makes me happy,” said grade 10 student, Siri Cook. “If my baking can help bring joy and give back to others, then that is even better.”

This year, CFAX Santas Anonymous is supporting the students’ cause by purchasing candy to be included in the gingerbread kits. Each kit costs $12.00. Individuals who wish to purchase a gingerbread house for a family in need can order online and indicate that they are purchasing the kit to donate to another family.

The deadline to order kits is December 7th at 8:00 a.m. Kits will be available for pick up at the school through December 10–17th by appointment to ensure all health and safety measures are being adhered to.
