Reminder: Kindergarten Registration and Kindergarten Transfer Process Starts Next Week

The annual Kindergarten registration and Kindergarten transfer process will take place next week between January 20 – January 24, 2020.  To be eligible to start Kindergarten in September 2020, a child must be five years old by December 31, 2020.

To register a student for Kindergarten, parents and guardians must register their child at their catchment school. Every school has a catchment boundary, which determines which students in a geographical area are eligible to attend a specific school. It is important to note that new catchment boundaries will be in effect for the 2020-21 school year, altering some school boundaries and introducing new catchments. To determine your catchment school and where you need to register visit: www.sd61.bc.ca/schools/school-catchment-boundaries/

“It is important to remind families that new school catchment boundaries will be in effect for the upcoming school year, which may affect where they register their child for Kindergarten,” shared Superintendent Shelley Green. “There were a number of changes to school boundaries, including the introduction of three new elementary catchments: South Park, Cloverdale and Sundance-Bank. We want to ensure that new students and families joining our District feel very welcomed and are off to a strong start by being well-informed and ready for the upcoming registration process.”

New school boundaries were approved in the 2018-19 school year after an extensive consultation process. For more information on the new catchment boundaries visit: www.sd61.bc.ca/news-events/media-releases/title/26533/

Important Registration Notices

Former Elementary Schools of Choice (South Park and Cloverdale) will become neighbourhood catchment schools in the 2020/21 school year.  Parents and guardians whose children live within these schools’ catchments will be able to register at those schools in January 2020 for the upcoming school year.

The Greater Victoria School District expects two classes of Kindergarten students at the NEW Sundance-Bank Elementary school site for the 2020-21 school year as it gradually starts to introduce classes. Families whose catchment is now Sundance-Bank will need to register at the District Board Office (556 Boleksine Road) from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. during registration week.

For Sundance-Bank Elementary parents/guardians who are seeking additional information, the District will be hosting an information session on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the Board Office. Childminding will be provided for families. If you wish to attend and require child care services, please RSVP to community@sd61.bc.ca

In addition, families looking to register an incoming student at Braefoot Elementary will need to register at the school’s temporary location at Richmond Elementary (2780 Richmond Road). Braefoot Elementary is currently undergoing seismic upgrades.
