Student Feature: Kidovate Event

Students Harness Entrepreneurial Spirit for Upcoming Kidovate Event on April 13

Among the 200+ students participating in the Gustavson School of Business event is Esquimalt High School student Maddie Evans, who is selling her handmade loom creations.

Kidovate will be hosted by the University of Victoria’s Gustavson School of Business at The Bay Centre on Saturday, April 13 from 10:00am to 4:00pm where the public can browse stalls hosted by local students like Maddie.

In Victoria we are lucky to see local businesses on every street corner. They are a reminder to shop local, to understand where our goods come from, and to support the skilled families and individuals in town that pour their soul into their craft.

For young people in our community, the jump from school to running a business can seem daunting. But thankfully, Victoria is also home to one of the few post-secondary business schools in Canada that has a specialization in entrepreneurship.

To help encourage the entrepreneurial spirit in our local students, the University of Victoria’s Gustavson School of Business is hosting Kidovate on Saturday, April 13 at The Bay Centre. From 10:00am to 4:00pm students from across multiple districts will sell their goods and services that they make, repurpose, and resell themselves. Participating students receive a free table, a graphic novel-style workbook to help guide key business decisions, as well as the opportunity to connect with UVic Business student and staff mentors.

Among the 200 participants signed up for the event is Grade 9 Esquimalt High School student Maddie Evans who will be selling her loom creations under the name Maddie Looms (@maddie_looms).

Good luck to all students participating and we hope to see our learning community come out to enjoy all the creativity, business ideas, and enthusiasm our students have to share on April 13.
