First of Two Victoria High Open Houses to be held this Saturday

The Greater Victoria School District is opening the doors of Victoria High School to the public this Saturday for an open house. The District welcomes members of the public to drop-in for coffee and cookies between 9 a.m. and 12 noon.

The open house will provide the community an opportunity to learn more about the plans to seismically upgrade the school. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and people are encouraged to provide their feedback. The open house will be a drop-in format to seek input on community values, ideas and challenges. There will be an activity table for families with young children and school tours will also be offered throughout the morning.

An online survey will also launch on Saturday and run until April 30th, 2018.

Opened in 1914, the high school has an H-1 seismic ranking, the highest level of priority need. The District is seeking community input to inform decision-making by the Board of Education.

There are a number of considerations when planning for upgrades to a high school including educational needs, capacity and student enrolment projections. Other considerations include operating and capital costs, heritage, environment, community values, and community amenities.

A range of options exist, including a full seismic upgrade, building a new high school, or retaining the exterior facade and rebuilding the interior.
