Board Meeting Highlights – January 2021

Funding Net-Zero Capital Projects

The Board is submitting a resolution to its provincial association BCSTA for its AGM 2021. The Board will be asking the provincial assembly of school trustees to support SD61’s efforts in urging the Ministry of Education and the Minister of Finance to fully fund net-zero capital upgrade and replacement school projects effective immediately. Net-zero funding aligns with the Board’s climate action resolution of June 2019, and builds green infrastructure across the province.

The Ministry of Education funds major capital projects through Districts’ annual five-year capital plans. Major capital upgrade or replacement projects are funded by the government. However, Ministry funding does not construct projects to a net-zero threshold. Boards are left to bridge Ministry’s funding to achieve net-zero initiatives, which may require reallocating funding from classrooms.

New Board Authority Authorized Course – Aviation Maintenance

The Board approved a new Board Authority Authorized course: Aviation Maintenance 12. The course will provide students an opportunity to explore the field of aircraft maintenance with theoretical and hands-on learning experiences while developing necessary employment skills. It will be offered at Mount Douglas Secondary.

Bylaw 9130.4 – Audit Sub-Committee

The Board adopted Bylaw 9130.4, which changes the audit committee from an ad hoc committee with finite work and timeline, to a sub-committee because of its on-going work and regular reporting. The Audit Sub-Committee will report to the Board through the appropriate standing committee: Education Policy & Directions or Operations Policy & Planning.
