Board Meeting Highlights – April 25, 2022

UPHIA – Urban Peoples’ House Indigenous Advisory (Terms of Reference)

In collaboration with the Urban Peoples’ House Indigenous Advisory (UPHIA), which is one of the Four Indigenous Houses represented within the Greater Victoria School District, the Board approved their Terms of Reference (TOR). This TOR outlines how the Board and UPHIA will work together to improve educational outcomes for Urban Indigenous learners. The TOR also outlines the role of the Indigenous Education Department (IED) in providing authentic Indigenous perspectives in the schools, in curriculum and shared decision-making while being in relationship with UPHIA. The TOR also defines the advisory membership, their roles and how the advisory will work together to represent community voice that best serves Urban Indigenous children and families.

Educational Materials – Fossil Fuel Sponsored Content

Trustees directed the Superintendent to meet with the Greater Victoria Teachers Association (GVTA) to discuss the appropriate use and distribution of fossil fuel industry-sponsored educational materials in schools.

2022/23 School Year Calendar

The Board approved the District calendar for the 2022/23 school year. The calendar highlights non-instructional days, vacation breaks, school openings and last day of classes. The calendar has been sent to the Ministry for final approval.

Specialty Academy Fees

The Board directed the District to publish the 2022-2023 Specialty Academy fees, which were approved by the Parents’ Advisory Council, online. Specialty academies include:

  • Esquimalt High School Rugby Academy
  • Lambrick Park Diamond for Excellence Baseball and Softball Academy
  • Reynolds Secondary Centre for Soccer Excellence Academy
  • Spectrum Hockey Skills Academy

2022/23 Annual Capital Plan

In response to the District’s June 2021 Capital Plan submission, the Ministry confirmed support and funding for major and minor capital projects. Projects include seismic upgrades for Sundance Elementary, windows at Vic High, new siding and windows at Lambrick Park Secondary, energy upgrades at Spectrum Community School and a universal playground at Macaulay Elementary. The Board adopted the plan by approving three readings of the Board’s Capital Bylaw.

Advocacy Letter to Education Minister

As a follow-up to the passing of the 2022/23 annual budget, the Board directed the Chair to write a letter to the Minister of Education regarding funding and budget constraints in the 2022/23 school year.


The next Board meeting will be held on Monday, May 30, 2022.
