New play space at View Royal Elementary encourages students to connect with nature

VICTORIA, BC –  View Royal Elementary School and the View Royal Parent Advisory Council (PAC) will celebrate the grand opening of their nature playground on Friday, June 15th.

The View Royal School community’s vision of a play space that combines nature and learning together is coming to fruition. The school is thrilled to announce it has a fully accessible playground that encourages students to learn and play with natural elements.

With a focus on activity and self-regulation, students are encouraged to interact with the natural setting to foster creativity and expand their knowledge about the environment. The design incorporates both teaching and play areas surrounded by natural materials, including sand pits, indigenous plants from the west coast, locally sourced tree stumps and boulders.

“It is always exciting when we create new stimulating environments for our students that also benefit the community and environment,” shared Board Chair Edith Loring-Kuhanga. This playground will serve to deliver curriculum-based learning and extra-curricular activities.”

The View Royal PAC raised more than $148,000 dollars through various fundraising drives with generous donations from municipal government, local agencies and community businesses for the community space. The school is very grateful for the PAC’s support and all of the donations.
