Response to School Video Receiving Online Hate
The Greater Victoria School District is aware that a recent Welcome Back to School video posted to a social media account by an SD61 school has been widely shared and has received many negative online comments.
The video was created as a fun and lighthearted way for staff to share their enthusiasm about welcoming students back for the new school year. Unfortunately, the video has since been misused and shared by individuals and groups whose values do not align with those of the District, generating discriminatory comments and hate speech targeting the presence of a Rainbow Flag displayed on a classroom wall.
We recognize that the attention surrounding the video and the nature of some of the comments have been distressing and harmful to members of the school community. Staff and students impacted by the harmful comments are encouraged to access available school and district supports.
The Greater Victoria School District continues to ensure its schools are safe, welcoming, and inclusive places where students and staff can learn and work in environments free from discrimination. The District is committed to upholding all human rights, including the rights of students and staff who are allies and members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
The Greater Victoria School District stands behind all staff members and the work they do each day to create learning environments that reflect our shared commitment to inclusion, diversity and belonging.
