Open House next week to plan for Cedar Hill Middle replacement school
VICTORIA, BC ─ The Greater Victoria School District is hosting an open house next Thursday at Cedar Hill Middle School to gather input on plans for the school’s seismic replacement. All members of the community are welcome to drop-in and share their input on future site developments between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
The open house will provide members of the public an opportunity to learn more about the new seismically safe school, while creating the space for them to share their feedback on proposed ideas.
This open house will focus on sites plans, including potential pick up and drop off options, traffic circulation, bike access and prioritization of amenities.
In Fall 2021, the District along with KMBR architects hosted a virtual open house to inform the public about the scope of public engagement and the upcoming project. It was followed with a question and answer period and a public survey on design features. The District and architects are now looking for input on specific site plans and accessibility.
“Our Board is really excited about this project and we want the community to feel involved at the early stages of planning,” said Board Chair Ryan Painter. “We will continue to engage with the community throughout this process, in efforts to build an inclusive and welcoming school that will benefit all of our students and staff for many years to come.”
The open house will be a drop-in format and will follow the guidance of public health. Staff will be present to answer questions. A third open house will be held later in the Spring, which will focus on building design (materials, aesthetic, community access to Neighbourhood Learning Centre spaces).
The current school has an H-1 seismic ranking, the highest level of priority need and needs to be replaced. In July 2021, the province announced $42.9 million for a low-carbon, seismic replacement for Cedar Hill Middle. The District will contribute another $3.6 million, bringing the project total to $46.5 million.
