| The Way to Go Program is part of a national movement that encourages children to get out of the car and use fun, healthy ways to get to and from school. Its goals are to help children improve their fitness, stop dangerous traffic build-up around the school and reduce air pollution.
Stand near the corner of Richmond and Townley when the school day begins or ends. A huge number of cars- often two or three hundred- converge on to one or two streets. Traffic rules and regulations are ignored as parents attempt to drop off or pick up their child(ren) as close as possible to the school doors. For example:
Parents regularly park illegally along the yellow lines on Townley, thereby obscuring site lines for pedestrians and cyclists and jeopardizing the safety of our children. Never park along the yellow lines within our school zone; it is both dangerous and illegal.
Parents are invited to use the staff parking lot when the busses are not yet at the Richmond site. Students come off the bus and go across the parking lot to get to class. Parents that are in the staff parking lot are asked to stay until the area is 'student free'.
In British Columbia 20% of all pedestrian accidents involve children under fifteen years of age and 60% of these accidents occur during the morning, noon and afternoon peak hours. If you can, leave your car at home; if you can’t leave your car at home park at least a block away. There is parking at the park on Townley.
Using alternative transportation choices, increases our children’s safety, provides opportunities for exercise and is good for the environment.
