ACCELERATED READER

Home Connect ---and--- Home Connect Tutorial

What is Accelerated Reader?

Usually starting in grade two, students at Torquay are enrolled in our Accelerated Reader program. This program is designed to encourage and motivate students to read regularly. At the same time, it helps continuously guide students to books that will maximize growth. Check the company website for a detailed explanation.

Student can only access Accelerated Reader in school but their progress can be checked anywhere using Home Connect.

How do student find Accelerated Reader Compatible Books?

Our school online library catalog will indicate which books are in the Accelerated Reader database. At the moment we have about 6000 books (up to 8000 within a year) which have AR reading levels and comprehension tests available. We hope that over the next year we will also have all our Accelerated Reader compatible books in our library physically labeled (red dot on the spine label and a label indicating reading range and interest level).

What is my child's 'Just Right' reading range?

Supporting our Accelerated Reader program is an assessment program called STAR Reader. This assessment can be done up to five times a year to help identify a student's 'Just Right' reading range and to measure growth and change in that reading range. To learn more about STAR Reader go to the company website.

How can you support Accelerated Reader at home?

Accelerated Reader has a Home Connect component that is accessed using the first letter of your child's first name and the first four letters of their last name all as one word. Students use the same password they use at school. Check out this online tutorial for Home Connect. Note that the vocabulary section component is not active for Torquay school. Also please do not call the support number noted in the tutorial.
