An Alternative within the
Greater Victoria School District
Read the "All About Sundance" brochure.
Sundance students and parents choose to come to Sundance School for a variety of reasons:
- Children's interests come first at Sundance.
- At Sundance there is strong parental involvement and partnership, parents are welcome in the classroom.
- There are lots of opportunities for multi-age student interactions: combined classes, buddies, events, projects and playtime.
- There are so many positive interactions between staff, students and parents.
At Sundance we believe:
- that children's learning comes first;
- that instruction can be balanced, personalized and flexible;
- in the importance of personal and social responsibility;
- in high academic standards within a nurturing, creative learning environment;
- in a safe and caring school environment;
- in planned and active parental involvement; and
- in honouring "partnerships in learning" between the school, parents and community.
At Sundance we operate as a team of parents, staff and students. We are flexible in our programs and opportunities provided and we always consider the child's needs. Sundance has strong parental and community involvement. All are committed to the philosophy that a child's learning comes first.
The Sundance community is committed to a learning environment that is gentle, caring and that has open communication. Therefore there is a high degree of personal safety, care and honour for all the school's learners.
A School of Choice
Sundance is an "Elementary School of Choice" within the Greater Victoria School District. This means that children who live anywhere within the school district can attend Sundance, but we do not have a designated catchment area. Every student chooses to attend.
Curriculum is governed by the BC Ministry of Education, but encompasses learning opportunities beyond the school based setting. Students are provided with opportunities for choice making in their learning outcomes within a meaningful framework.
Learning programs are flexible, adapted to learning styles and rates of each learner, and skill based. Assessment is ongoing and includes self-evaluation within an anecdotal reporting format. Sundance does not give letter grades. We believe this provides more freedom for educational programs and activities. The focus is not on competition with others, but striving for one's personal best.
Mission Statement
The Sundance community of students, staff and parents is committed to providing quality academic experiences in a respectful, accepting and co-operative environment.
