Friendships
We all know that friendships are an important part of learning and life. At Oaklands, adults work with friendship issues daily. But what constitutes a friendship? How does it look throughout the elementary years?
ActNow BC & Ryan Leech
We have choices about everything we do. It is a hard lesson to learn sometimes but it is a good one that will serve each individual well throughout their lifetime. Ryan Leech, an international trials bike rider was in our school this March (http://www.ryanleech.com/) and he left students with tips for healthy living: |
|
| 1. | Learn - by taking action in line with goals and dreams. |
| 2. | Honesty - with all people, including ones self. |
| 3. | Green - the food I eat and the earth I treat. |
He demonstrated amazing abilities on his bike and a variety of apparatus. He talked about hard work and many hours of practice. Mostly he talked about choices and how the choices we make help us to get results-hopefully positive ones. |

Oaklands is, once again, offering Mini Rugby for boys and girls in grade three, four and five. The season will run from late March to Friday May 13th. Mr. Laughton and Mr. Eckardt have volunteered to provide an introduction to the game. There are a few things you should be informed of before you give your permission for your son/daughter to participate. Mini Rugby is a modification of the game of Rugby designed specifically for younger players. Teams of 9 players attempt to carry to ball over their opponent's goal line. The other team tries to prevent this by tackling the ball carrier. The game emphasizes team skills, running and passing, and is ideally suited to boys and girls of grade 4/5 level. However it is a contact sport and as such, there is a potential for injuries. In order to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all players, coaches introduce contact by progressing from light contact to tackling in a game like situation. Safety and appropriate body position are always an important part of our introduction of the game. Contact rules are strictly enforced and, initially, the coaches are on the field with players to control and teach the skills of the game. We further promote safety by having the boys and girls play in an appropriate weight divisions. These divisions are; Under 42 Kg (approx, 93 lbs.), Under 50 Kg (approx,110 lbs.) for grade 4/5 and under 36 Kg (approx, 80 lbs) for grade 3/4. Players weighing more than 50 Kg are welcome to participate and learn the skills of the game. These players are asked to participate as non-contact players when playing other schools. All players will require mouth guards for both practice and games. Soccer cleats are suggested and shorts are mandatory for games. Players should have separate training gear or at least old clothes for practices.

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You're off to Great Places!
You're off and away!
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any
direction you choose.
You're on your own.
And you know what you know.
And YOU are the person who'll
decide where to go.

Our school year has begun and the strength of our culture is growing. My walk-a-bouts around the school are opportunities to talk to students, staff, and parents. The conversations sometimes produce concerns that need to be addressed but more often, the talk focuses on the qualities that promote a love of learning. As Dr. Suess indicates, congratulations- opportunities for learning are here for to explore!
Our school is healthy, safe, and exciting! Come and enjoy or simply visit us by dropping in to our office. We would love you to enjoy the warmth of our community.
Be sure to read all areas of our newsletters throughout the year. Areas included give information about upcoming events, and dates to remember. The newsletter is a great way to see what has happened, is happening, and going to happen in our fast-paced, exciting community of Oaklands School!
