The First Step in an Incredible Adventure

Kindergarten Registration for

September 2010 will take place February 1 - 5, 2010

Beginning school is a big step for your child and your whole family. It's a wonderful and exciting experience, but it also means a big change for you and your child.

We want to help you get off to a good start by giving you information that will help you prepare, and some ideas to keep you involved in your child's education.

Play is an important part of the kindergarten program.  When children are playing in the kindergarten, they aren't taking a break from learning, and the teacher isn't taking a break from teaching.  Through play, children learn skills such as reading, writing, math and science.  They also learn essential social skills through problem-solving and being creative in their thinking.  As they play, they learn about the world and how it works, about other people, about themselves.

THINGS YOU CAN DO

Choose a letter, maybe one per week, and together find things around the house that begin with that letter.

Play "Go Fish" - you know the card game - now use the idea with letters.  Put the letters on some card or tag board and deal out cards to everyone that is playing.  Make pairs, and if it gets too easy change from letters to initial word sounds.

Same or different - can be played in a number of ways.  You can try to find things in the house that are the same shape but different sizes, or the same shape but different colours or the same colour but different shapes, or using the same number find two different examples (2 rocks, 2 books, etc.).

For other games please visit our Learning Portal and look for the Kindergarten link.  You will find activities suitable to your child, as well as some for older children in the family.
