A chariot race, assembly of the Gods(Well...close relations anyway in the GMS Staff), grand sporting events of all kinds, and inspiring words from our favourite Olympian himself , Adamus Kreekus - now that is the way to open a school year! Heroic Beginnings was the theme for our opening week in this year of the Vancouver Olympics as we discovered the hero in each of us who would help make another great year at Glanford. Click here to view a video of the week's events.
Our charitable endeavours continued as we raised in excess of $25,000.00 dollars for our traditional benefactors - Cops for Cancer, Canadian-Harambee Educational Society, Heart & Stroke Foundation. We filled another truck with food for the Saanich Lions to donate to local food banks on our annual PJ's & Pancakes Day and stuffed Socks for the Homeless in our classrooms. This year we also joined Me-to-We as six of GMS's finest attended the huge Vancouver conference in the fall and then generated ways to bring the goals of the movement to reality at our school.
Of course Studio 85 was on the air every day to broadcast all this news and a good deal of entertainment. Once again the studio attracted the attention of local media as Island 30 with Dana Hutchings came in to do a piece on how a middle school T. V. operation works. No doubt she left with some excellent ideas as our five producers showed her the ropes. Click here to view the broadcast segment. The Olympic Torch also made a visit to Studio 85 accompanied by Minster of State for Sport, The Honourable Gary Lunn. Click here to view Mr. Lunn's interview.
GMS remained a place where on any given day you might experience The Golden Boot, PJ's & Slippers, Sigmund Brouwer, GWO's(Gecko Wacky Olympics), Band Trips, Renaissance Fairs, Survivor Boot Camp, Retro-Assemblies, Eco-Rowers, Anti-Bullies, Juggy-Ballerz, Classroom Museums, Rugby Scrummers, Volleyballers(Beach & Court), Soccer players, Infinitus, Mini-X'ers, Duffelbag Thespians, Musicians & Singers, Skaters & Warhammer Titans... and that about scratches the surface of activity at Glanford. Take a look at the galleries and videos from the year to get a better feel for the energy of our school.
As the school year came to a close we once again had to say our bittersweet good-byes to friends who helped to make GMS a great place to come to school. Mrs. O'Connor, whose diligent assistance has been instrumental in getting so many students through grade 8 takes her well-earned retirement. Mr. Welby, Master of Strings, Boy-Bander Extraordinaire, takes his considerable talents to Central. And Mrs. Norbury, who has inspired us all with her creativity, her thoughtful contributions and her ability to unite goes back to Elementary school at Eagle View. We will miss you and think of you often as we carry on the legacy of excellence that you brought to Glanford. |

645's Go Provincial
It was a great sporting year at GMS. Among our successes at the competitive level were city champions in girls 4 x 100 relay, boys 3rd in City's Rugby and an undefeated Senior Girls' Soccer team. The grade eight Girls' Basketball Team - the 645's - who finished 2nd in a thrilling City Final earned a wild card berth to the B.C.'s where they went 2-2 and finished 11th in the Province. Before they went they made this little video that is sure to delight you.
