2008-2009 began, as is our custom at GMS, by welcoming our new Mavericks with a week of culture building. 'Building Bridges' was our theme as we strove to create connections between our older and younger students through shared activities and experiences. The week culminated in a school-wide celebration of the work we did together.
Big news from the year included our incredible efforts to assist our charities. In September we raised a record amount for the 'Cops for Cancer' Tour de Rock. 20 of GMS's most hirsute (and Mr. Shires who was just getting a trim) gave up their hair as we took in an amazing $17,062.62 to help with cancer research and treatment. At Christmas we once again donated a truckload of food to local food banks and in the Spring our 'Water Walk for Africa' raised $3000.00 to continue our support of a girls' school in Tanzania.
The 'Water Walk' was part of our 'F.L.O.W. - For the Love OF Water Week'(Click here for a MUST-SEE Video) where we took a time to to learn about water in our world. Guest speakers, field trips(14 buses going 14 different ways), the walk, and a Symposium where we invited guests from the community and our elementary schools to share in our learning about this most precious resource were all part of the week.
The year in Studio 85 was highlighted by a visit from Global T.V.'s Tony Parsons who co-anchored the morning broadcast on May 11. Our five fabulous Producers also had the opportunity to shine outside of our closed-circuit as they made a presentation to the Greater Victoria School Board about the studio and its place in the Glanford learning community.
As always our year was strung together with countless opportunities in music, athletics, Mini-X, Retro-Assemblies (Girls Bands joined the Boys this year!), the Annual Ski Trip, and Staff/Student Challenges. Cabaret & Patisserie Night once again brightened our February in another incomparable night of art and music. Glanford welcomed guests musical - Scrap Arts Music, comical - Vancouver Theatre Sports, and inspirational - GMS's favourite Olympian, Adam Kreek. Vern & Vürn were gone but other characters showed up to take their place (thanks Fern & Fürn, Square Brains et al) who helped to make Glanford a joyous and unpredictable place to come to every day.
With the close of 2008-2009 we said good-bye to Miss Marcyzk as she moves on to Gordon Head School. Her patience, her friendliness and her smile will be missed by all and especially by her Girl Band-mates.
