2007-2008
was another busy and eventful year at GMS
as we continued to build our culture where learning and maturing
could take place in an atmosphere of opportunity and joy.
'Building
Our Culture Together' was the theme of our opening RUBE
GOLDGERG WEEK. The week was a chance to meet and welcome
our new 6's - who would become the ROCKIN' ROOKIES, to provide
leadership opportunities for our 7's and 8's, and to have fun
being creative together.
Our
music program continued to be a model of excellence for middle
schools everywhere. The December Concert, whose reading this year
was 'THE HOCKEY SWEATER' by Roch Carrier,
was a SRO symphony of colour and sound. CABARET
& PATISERRIE NIGHT was expanded to include artists,
poets, karaoke, and coffeeshop performers. In December our 2nd
CD, FANFARES & FLOURISHES that included our new choir, was
released.
Studio
85 was on the air everyday bringing news, entertainment and odd
moments to the whole school on channel 85. In February, we welcomed
ED BAIN from CHEK News and the Q
as a guest anchor.
Old
favourites - PJ's & Pancakes, the Golden Boot, overflowing
teams in every sport, Retro-Assemblies, Vern & Vurn, Survivor
Boot Camp, Beach Volleyball Day - were joined by the Trashinators,
Werner from Dusseldork (see the Ed Bain on Studio 85 Video)and
Orange & Black Day.
In
the Fall we raised over $10,000 for the Cops for Cancer 'TOUR
de ROCK' as 15 GMS-ers of all grades
and ages shaved their heads to encourage contributions. When Spring
arrived our 'RUN FOR READING' tallied another $2700.00 to help
build a girls' school in Tanzania and a
library
in Ghana.
GMS
Alum and world-famous author, KENNETH OPPEL, was welcomed back
to Glanford and read to us from his latest book, 'Darkwing'. As
well, our favourite author, NIKKI TATE, returned to during LITERACY
WEEK with Canadian Paralympian, KAREN BRAIN, to read from
her biography 'Double Take - The Biography of Karen Brain'. TREVOR
CALKINS was the keynote speaker at our 'Are you Smarter Than a
Glanford 6th Grader' MATH NIGHT.
As
the year closed we had to say 'Good-Bye' to Mr. Flello who took
on a new assignment at Reynold's Secondary School. The driving
force behind the best middle school music program and an unceasing
GMS booster, his artistry, humour
and caring would be missed. Huge shoes to fill for sure but, no
doubt, his legacy of excellence would be long remembered and maintained
at Glanford Middle School.
