Maverick Invitational Champions
Happy New Year to the GMS learning community!
Hopefully, two weeks of rest and relaxation have served everyone well! We are back into our routines at Glanford and everyone is ready to get back to work!
We have reminded our students of the importance of being safe, particularly on the way to and from school. Walking to and from school is best, particularly with a friend or two! Staying on sidewalks and using crosswalks are very important. Wearing helmets when riding bicycles and skateboards is an expectation. Dressing appropriately for the ongoing cold and wet weather are also important. Thank you, parents, for your support at home with these important issues.
We will be surveying our students for their selections for the second round of Mini-X. The dates are set for Fridays, January 27th, February 3rd, 10th, and 24th. As a reminder, parents that are able to offer a Mini-X on these days are encouraged to contact Mr. Scigliano in the office. The more varied the enrichment offerings for our students, the better!
In the world of athletics, our senior girl’s basketball team are CITY CHAMPIONS! We are very proud of the team, as they have worked hard and come together to be a great team! Watch for a GMS Mavericks hosted tournament at the end of January, and Provincial Championships in Vancouver mid way through March. Our drop in floor hockey group will continue to play once per week – everyone welcome! This has been lots of fun for all involved! Volleyball is the next sport that GMS will be offering – students are encouraged to get involved!
In the world of music, our talented musicians had two outstanding performances before the winter break – congratulations to all involved! The next performance that the musicians are working toward is the annual Glanford Cabaret & Patisserie event, planned for Tuesday, February 7th. This is an event you don’t want to miss!
We are planning for the annual GMS Ski Trip to Mt. Washington, planned for Tuesday, February 21st. Detailed forms will be coming home with every student. This is an optional day of recreation for our learning community; those students that do not wish to participate will be offered a full day of activities, including recreation, as an option to the ski trip.
See you in and around Glanford.

Mav's Take Invitational
It was an exciting weekend of basketball at the Maverick Invitational. The final came down to a rubber match between Glanford and the Pacific Christian Pacers. Having split their previous two games this season, this thrilling, hard-fought battle went to our Mavericks, 43--35. The Bayside Sharks beat The Clayburn Cougars from Abbotsford for 3rd and 4th and the quartet of Upper Island teams, Mark R. Isfeld from Courtenay, Cedar, AW Neill from Alberni and Qualicum Beach finished 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th respectively.

Fashionably Fabulous January Retro
The fashion police may have made some arrests but the talent scouts in the crowd would have been nothing but pleased at the January Retro. Another inductee into the Glanford Idol Hall of Fame, a welcome to our Brazilian students, the Hoops for Heart Kick-Off and SuperModels! What a show!

Way to Bee
The tension doesn’t get much greater than the GMS Spelling Bee and we were back on the edge of our seats at the 2012 edition. Yes, a packed Multipurpose Room watched 20 start and, in the end, saw two new winners left standing. Congratulations to Gurman and Alex as they move on to represent our school at the regionals.

Snow!
It was perfect timing for a snow storm! It hit GMS hardest at recess and we couldn’t get outside fast enough for some slipping and sliding and snow slurping. Snow doesn’t come often to Victoria, but we sure know how to enjoy it!

Skittle Me This
The projectiles were flying in the Glanford gymnasium as the Hoopla met for their first Skittle Championship. Knocking down the pins and knocking out opponents were the object but great exercise & fun were the outcome. It was Brooker’s Bozos defeating Seaberg’s Shockz for the inaugural SkittleFest gold while Gerhardt’s Goofs eliminated Kind’s Killerz for the Bronze. Beech’s Beasts...had lots of fun!

Staff Earns Earl
It was a close one this year as the senior basketball teams battled the staff for the Golden Earl. It helps to have the 6'4" Mr. Shires with his deft hands around the basket when you're facing such determined and skilled opponents. The packed house were treated to some thrilling roundball with the staff emerging on the top end of the 18-14 score.

Gecko Garden Planting
The Geckos got together for their second gathering on the GMS back field to plant 125 native trees and shrubs. It was wet and mucky but the kids focused on their jobs and had fun doing it. The weather was on our side as the past three days have brought a deluge of rain, but not today! Thank you to Todd and his helpers from H.A.T. for all of their leadership and direction on this project, along with our very own Mr. Allsopp.
