What
is Reading Recovery? - Reading Recovery is a research-based,
short term intervention for children who struggle with early literacy learning.
-
Children who are taken into Reading Recovery receive daily half-hour one-on-one
individually designed lessons tailored specifically to each student's strengths
and needs.
- Reading Recovery lessons are always delivered by a trained
Reading Recovery certified teacher.
- Lessons typically last from 16-22
weeks.
- Every child makes progress; most discontinue after this accelerated
learning at the level of their classroom peers.
- As students discontinue,
or are discharged with a referral for further support, new students are taken
in.
What can Reading Recovery do for my child?
- A key premise of Reading Recovery is that the early intervention is
critical. Research shows that children who fall behind in grade 1 tend to remain
below grade level in later school years.
- Although all children progress
during their Reading Recovery lessons a few do not make the accelerated progress
needed to succeed without extra help. These children may be recommended for additional
evaluation and support.
What happens during Reading Recovery
lessons? Each lesson consists of:
-
re-reading familiar stories, -
reading a story that was read for the first time the day before, -
working with letters and words using magnetic letters, -
writing a story, -
assembling
a cut-up story, and -
reading a new book Accelerated
learning is possible because instruction is based on daily record keeping and
analysis of this data on order for the teacher to keep instruction at the cutting
edge of what the child already knows and still needs to know about reading and
writing. This is an effective approach that allows all future instruction to build
on the child's strengths, while moving from the known to the unknown.
