Student classroom placement is the result of thoughtful consideration of numerous
factors by staff. After the annual staffing has been allotted to the school in
September, the principal, in consultation with the professional staff, finalizes
a projected school organization for the school year. We carefully consider the
number of students at each grade level and the needs of each student.
Classes
are developed as a result of:
Input from this year’s teachers,
the students, parents, student support teacher, counselor, education assistants,
vice-principal and principal, and
IEP review meetings for students
with special needs.Every effort is made to place each child in the most appropriate
learning environment, academically, socially, and emotionally in the larger context
of the needs of all our students. Attention always is given to placing students
with a friend who adds a positive dimension to a child’s learning. Each
student is considered individually and each class is considered as a heterogeneous
unit. Parents should inform their child’s teacher if there are any particular
learning placement considerations for their children. While your request is one
very important factor thoroughly considered in the educational placement decision
for your child, we cannot guarantee that your request will be granted.
The
following factors are considered during the complex class organization process:
-
Specific learning strengths, needs and styles
-
the child’s need for attention in social,
emotional and behavioural areas
-
Male/female
balance
-
Siblings
-
Effort,
achievement, independence and leadership
-
Groupings
appropriate for the best learning environment for all
-
Dynamics
between children
-
Parent input to teachers
-
The child’s need for learning assistance
or access to special education services
-
Logistical
requirements concerning the child’s access to the support of an Education
Assistant whose service is provided in more than one classroom
-
Number of years the child has been with the teacher
-
Cultural diversity
-
Classes
with two grades (commonly known as combined classes - *see below)
-
Anaphylaxis
-
Out of school
care
* combined classes (two grades)
are created for a variety of reasons including: number of students at a certain
grade level and meeting other organizational, instructional or learning needs.
With all class placements, we aim to provide for a range of student skills, attitudes
and knowledge within each class.
The Principal, in accordance with
the School Act of BC, makes the final decision about student placement and school
organization.
