Introduction

The schools cycling series is open to all schools registered with the LOWER VANCOUVER ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS ATHLETIC ASOCIATION (LVISSAA) and LOWER ISLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS (LIMSSA) in school districts 61 and 61. For further details about participation, contact your school's athletic director.

Event Details

Below is a list of the types of events that may form part of the schools cycling series, with a description of the event and any details that may be relevant for that type of event. Please note that the event types may change, but do depend on participant feedback and the vailability of venues and organisers.

SlilzJam

This task requires bike handling skills . We normally kick off the school series with a fun test on the varied terrian of Hartland mountain bike part. Each "station" has a beginner, intermediate and experienced option. Start at the level you're comfortable with, or do all three.

Super D

The super D is an extended downhill that emphasizes flow, weight shift and anticipation of trail features. This version has less downhill, but all the flow and bike handling fun for all levels of riders. Riders start at one minute intervals - riders' skill against the clock. If time permits, each rider will have 2 attempts; a training ride and a race ( about 5 - 10 min each) Course to be used is "Shock Treatment" , starting at the south end, finishing at the regional trail - so you can practice ahead if you wish.

Short Track

Short Track is a short, snappy form of Cross Country racing. This version will feature a short circuit of 500 to 1000 m, low to medium difficulty. The event rewards bike handling, acceleration and timing. Each rider gets two rides of 10 minutes, against 3 to 9 other riders; first a heat then a final against similar ability riders. Points awarded for placing in the finals.

Cyclo Cross

Cyclocross is an off road discipline that emphasizes agility with dismounts and remounts, and lots of low speed twists and turns. Riders will learn how to hop low barriers by dismounting to a run, lifting the bike as they hop, then remounting on the move. The competition is short 15- 30 minutes. Skills count.

City Championships

Longer course Cross Country racing. This version will feature a circuit in excess of 1000m, low to medium difficulty. A shorter circuit will be available for the younger cyclists who are not planning on attending the BC Provincial Championships. The event is meant to test the athletes stamina. Points awarded for placing in the finals.

Criterium

A criterium focuses on a few shorter and faster events, rather than longer events. Points awarded for placing in the finals.

Track Racing

Track cycling on the banked concrete velodrome teaches a fast fluid pedal stroke, drafting, and speed; things useful in all cycling. Victoria's velorome is beginner friendly 27 degrees. so no one worries about slipping off. Track bikes provided. Flat shoes and pedals only.

BMX

Side by side riding on a smooth dirt track with rolling "whoop de-doo's" and banked corners. And its fast - less than a minute per race. Learn the secrets of speed without pedaling. School's league has fewer riders per heat. Flat shoes and pedals only. Long sleeves and pants, gloves and full face helmets are recommended. Bring your mountain bike if you want to warm up without waiting for a loaner bike.

Registration

Registration for all events is due by 4pm on the Friday before each event.
Competitors details are to be sent to Bruce Tonkin email: bruce.tonkin@shaw.ca, with name and grade level.

Pre-season Paperwork

1) BC School sports on-line Registration
Coaches must register all cyclists before cyclists may compete with the league and for BC School Sports Championship.
Please note that cycling is now an official sport recognized by BC School Sports; therefore, all teams that are members of LVISSA are also members of BC School Sports and as such must complete the BC School Sport Registration on line registration by the April 20th. Students can be added until May 2.
A copy of this list will be kept by the Commissioner to confirm who is eligible to compete.

2) Permission and Waivers
There is one waiver required by athletes. Coaches are responsible for ensuring that each rider has the waiver signed by a parent, or guardian, witnessed by the coach. This is for your protection! (some schools/districts may require additional permission forms)
Coaches are to bring the waivers to each race. Riders without a waiver cannot and will not race, this is for their protection and yours.

Disputes

If you or your riders have any concern about something that has happened during the race, note that only coaches may make an official notice of a dispute. Please ensure that cyclists and parents do not take on this responsibility. After exploring the possibilities and finding out as much as possible, if you have a concern then please see the commissioner or the Race Director. If you wish to file an official notice of a dispute then this must be done by noon on the first school day following the race. All disputes will be resolved by a committee consisting of the Race Director, the Commissioner, and the Results Director.
