Dear Parents,

Your son or daughter may wish to participate in school sponsored athletic programs this year or next year at the Secondary level. It is important for students and their parents to be aware of the rules which govern student participation in athletics in order to avoid possible disappointment. Please take time to review the following information regarding student eligibility

REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS FOR PARTICIPANTS OF INTERSCHOOL COMPETITION

EXPECTATIONS: School Athletics are an extension of the classroom, and

carry the same moral and legislative obligations for coaches, athletes and spectators.

 Players are expected to:

- Treat opponents with respect

- Play hard, but within the rules

- Exercise self control at all times

- Respect the decision of the officials  without gesture or argument

- Win with humility, lose with dignity

- Show that it is a privilege to represent their school and community

- Recognize and applaud honestly and wholeheartedly the efforts of  teammates or opponents regardless of colour, creed or race.

Spectators will be expected to behave in a positive, courteous manner as guests of the host school.

Coaches too, are expected to maintain high standards of conduct. Please be aware that any form of recruitment of students to attend a particular school for athletics violates the Associations' philosophy and regulations.

A Discipline Committee exists to rule on violations of the Rules or Association Regulations including conduct. Following due process, they will determine  a course of action that may include suspension of a student, coach, a team or a school from Athletic Leagues / Events.

ATHLETE ELIGIBILITY:

School Standards: Students can only play for the member school at which they are registered & must live up to accepted school and district standards as judged by the School Administrator.

Full time Student status: A student must be full time as judged by the school administrator.

Parental approval: Prior to participation, the student must have submitted evidence of parental or legal guardian approval of participation, to be kept on file at the school. PARTICIPATION CONSENT FORMS MUST BE COMPLETED FOR EACH SPORT YOUR SON/DAUGHTER ENTERS.

Age/grade restrictions: Students have five (5) consecutive school calendar years of athletic eligibility starting on entry date into grade 8.

LVISSAA : Two Age groups – Sr. and Jr. – check rules for details. The student must not have completed graduation requirements in the preceding school year or accepted a Senior Secondary Certificate of Standing in the current school year.

LIMSSA: Various age groupings are established for gr. 6 - 8 leagues.

LVISSAA Student Transfers and Eligibility Appeals: If a student in their 3rd,4th or 5th year of eligibility transfers to a school other than that which is a natural advancement according to catchment boundaries, without a corresponding move  by the parents, he/she may have to sit out one year of "restricted competition" (league games/events leading to provincial qualification). There are many policies that affect Eligibility, so it is important that School Athletic Director or Rules Source should be contacted when there is any change in schools past grade 10.

check  our local rules and regulations or www.bcschoolsports.ca for complete details

A school may apply to have a student made eligible. Specific, complete appeal information must be supplied by parents and schools and submitted to a  Provincial Compliance Officer, who will make rulings on all appeals. The student will not be eligible to participate until ruled eligible.

All schools are members of local School Athletic Associations which are operated  by school volunteers within the regulations established by BC SCHOOL SPORTS. The Lower Vancouver Island Secondary Schools Athletic Association (L.V.I.S.S.A.A.) & The Lower Island Middle Schools Sports Association (L.I.M.S.S..A.).
