Please be advised that when snow is expected in the Greater Victoria School District, we monitor the weather and road conditions well before schools open in the morning. In the event that there are any schools impacted or closed by snow, the District website and local radio stations are your best sources of information. Should there be a heavy snowfall, please be advised that the following radio stations will be alerted:
CFAX 1070 AM, CBC 90.5 FM,The Ocean 98.5 FM, 100.3 THE Q FM, JACK 103.1 FM
How We Determine if Schools Should be Closed Due to Inclement Weather
If there is snow overnight and accumulation in the morning, we make every attempt to make a decision regarding school closures prior to 6:30 a.m. If we do not make the decision by 6:30 a.m., then students who have early morning classes such as band and leadership might already be heading off to their respective schools. Parents and guardians also need as much time as possible to make alternate arrangements for their children should schools be closed. This means that the decision to close schools has to be made well in advance of regular school hours.
If there is snow fall accumulation during the day, we need to ensure the safe return of students home. Many parents and guardians are working and cannot pick up their children early from school and many children are too young to be at home alone. For these reasons, we believe that it is better to keep students safely with us at our schools rather than to have an early dismissal. During days of inclement weather, any decision not to send your child to school, or to pick up your child prior to dismissal, is understood.
